Music and Musicians with Latin American Roots
Itinerarios is a weekly two-hour radio program which features music and musicians from throughout Latin America. Music by the acknowledged masters of Mexico, South and Central America and the Caribbean Islands is presented in a free flowing session which also features performers with Latin American affiliations. These world class artists bring a distinctive interpretive power to not only music of Latin America, but also to the great body of European music. A typical edition of Itinerarios might place interpretations of Beethoven, played by the Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio, alongside the guitar music of Paraguayan composer Augustin Barrios performed by the Welsh guitarist David Russell. Itinerarios is a fascinating palette which celebrates the contribution of Latin America to the world of classical music. Itinerarios was added to the lineup of KPAC and KTXI programming in the Fall of 2003.

|
The programming found on tinerarios is derived principally from commercial recordings from both the Texas Public Radio library and the personal collection of program host James Baker. In addition, the program features live concert recordings plus interviews and specially produced segments from locations such as the International Guitar Festival in Paracho, Michoacan and the International Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato, GTO.
The program producer and host, James Baker, has extensive knowledge and experience with Latin American music, especially the music and musicians of Mexico. Mr. Baker is a professional musician who has performed not only with the San Antonio Symphony and various other American orchestras, but also lived in Mexico while he was a member of the Orquesta Filarmonica de la Ciudad de Mexico, the Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Xalapa. In addition, Baker has played with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria and with Eduardo Mata’s ensemble Solistas de Mexico.

It's a Mahler-fest at this year's summer season of the Mexico City based Mineria Orchestra. Oh for a vacation! In lieu of hearing Mahler in the stunning acoustic of of the Sala Netzhualcoytl, we will hear several recordings from previous Mineria seasons on this week's edition of Itinerarios.
August 15
The Dorian record label recently issued a set of recordings made by Eduardo Mata and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, while RCA has the excellent but difficult to find Eduardo Mata Edition. On today's program we will dip into both collections for music by Leonard Bernstein and Silvestre Revueltas.
August 22
Put on your dancing shoes for this week's program as we sample a variety of dance music from Latin America. Open toe sandals will do for folk dances from the Andes, but bring your fancy shoes for the seductive tangos of Argentina and Uruguay.

Pianist and teacher Alberto Portugheis was born in La Plata, Argentina to Romanian and Russian parents. Today, his career takes him around the globe and frequently into recording studios, where he has recorded music by Rossini, Shostakovich and Khachaturian. Today’s program finds Maestro Portugheis playing Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto and a couple of “trifles” by Rossini.

The sophisticated harmonic palette of Mexican jazz man Eugenio Toussaint alerted many to the possibilities of Toussaint as a composer of concert music. Over the years he has delivered well crafted compositions, including a Piano Concerto which we will feature on this week's program.

Carlos Chavez wrote music in almost every genre: symphonies, ballets, and chamber music. We find only a couple of concerted works, one of those for piano and orchestra. Chavez also wrote a substantial number of pieces for piano alone. On today’s show we hear his Concierto para Piano y Orquesta and various of his solo piano works played by Maria Teresa Rodriguez.

Antonio Carlos Jobim did not emerge as a writer of popular music in the “popular” fashion. His early training was in classical music, followed by instruction in twelve-tone composition from the radical Hans Joachim Koellreutter. On this week’s program we will hear the “symphonic” Jobim as well as music from both supporters and detractors of Koellreutter.

The Mexican songwriter Maria Grever wrote not only her own original songs, the most important her signature Jurame, but was also a collaborator with numerous of the notable American songwriters. Cole Porter asked her to write Spanish lyrics to Begin the Beguine, and she obliged. On this week’s program, we feature a modest Maria Grever sampler with performances by Juan Diego Florez, Benny Goodman and Trio Janitzio.

Although the question of statehood for Puerto Rico continues to be a contentious issue and one far from resolution, many Puerto Rican musicians have contributed in a variety of ways to the musical and patriotic fabric of the USA. Numerous Puerto Ricans have shed their blood in support of America. Noel Estrada wrote his most memorable song after serving the US Armed Forces in World War II. The Puerto Rican pianist Jesus Sanroma gave important performances and recordings of music by Grofe and Gershwin. Today we celebrate July 4th with a Puerto Rican twist.

Discovering recordings for use on Itinerarios can be a full time pursuit. This is why it is always so amazing to find box sets, especially when those sets are budget priced. Enrique Batiz’ series of recordings by Mexican composers has been reissued in a box by Brilliant Classics. This same label has been generous as well in reissuing the complete Villa-Lobos String Quartets with the Cuarteto Latinoamericano. Boxes and boxes will be featured on today’s show.

Many regard the Orquesta Sinfonica de Sao Paulo the best orchestra in Latin America. They emerged as a serious contender during the tenure of Music Director John Neschling. Maestro Neschling has now stepped aside, yet his recordings with the orchestra continue to emerge. On this week's program, Schumann, Beethoven and Villa-Lobos played by the Sao Paulo Orchestra.

A common misconception is that Spanish music falls under the heading of Latin American music. Not so! However, Spanish music finds many fine interpreters in Latin America. In many cases, though not always, it is in the blood of the musician. On this week's program we will hear Albeniz played by the Chilean pianist Pola Baytelman, Falla played in both Mexico and Venezuela, and Granados performed by Jorge Federico Osorio.

When the Catholic Church came to Nueva Espana, it brought with it a centuries old tradition of religious music, including the Latin Mass. This music flourished in the New World and also spawned new church music from both the Spanish composers and the most talented of the indigenous composers who found a place in the church. On this week's program we hear how the Old World met the New through the Church.

The Chilean writer Pablo Neruda wrote both prose and poetry, but it is the poetry which has captured the imagination of many composers. His words seemingly flow naturally into melody. This week's program will seek out songs inspired by the words of Neruda. At least some of these will come from the voice of Luciano Souza as she channels the poetry of Neruda through music by Osvaldo Golijov.

When we think of dance music of Cuba we likely think of highly charged, syncopated music. Yet there are many historical layers of dance in Cuba, layers which mirror to some degree the history of Cuba. This week's program will feature a mix of formal contradanzas, sones, and danzones along with an important ballet by Eduardo Sanchez de Fuentes.

The Cuban clarinetist, saxophonist, band leader, composer Paquito d'Rivera ranks with Wynton Marsalis as a musician who can transition with the greatest of ease from jazz to classical and back to jazz. He captures that aspect of his remarkable talent in a collaboration with clarinetist Sabine Meyer. The album is called Jazz-Clazz and we will hear selections from this disc and others from d'Rivera's vast discography on this week's program.

Last week's program took us to the northern extreme of Latin America, to the border with the United States. On this week's show we go to the other extreme, to Patagonia, and as near to Tierra del Fuego as the music will allow.

La Frontera refers to Mexico's borders, both North and South, but most often to the borderlands in the northern states. Yes, this is where the drug war is most apparent, but it is also a region which has spawned music in a variety of ways. Today's show will feature music about the mysterious Chisos Mountains of the Big Bend region and music performed by a musicians in the area of Tijuana.
